Thank you for your interest in our NAPS Nurse New Grad Program. We are so excited that you are interested in maternal/child health, and can’t wait to learn more about you!
Let us first tell you a little bit more about us….
NAPS was founded in 2011 by Emily and Jamie, two nurses who met while working together on a busy labor and delivery unit here in Boston. After becoming friends and learning more about how other countries and health care systems better support maternity patients and their babies, Emily and Jamie set out to fill the gap in education, care, and support for expecting and new parents. In addition to wanting to fill the gap in care for this vulnerable population, Emily and Jamie (after realizing that their voice and growth was limited within the hospital system) also wanted to provide a better, more supportive, positive and welcoming environment for nurses who share their same passion for maternal/child health. And so, NAPS was born (pun intended) and we now employ more than 30 registered nurses and nurse practitioners.
Ok, so that’s cool and all, but what can we do for YOU as a new grad?
Great question! It’s not lost on us that maternal/child health is still one of the most popular fields that nurses are trying to get into. It’s also not lost on us that this still remains one of the hardest areas for nurses, especially new grads, to get into (just ask Jamie, she called the nurse manager on the labor and delivery floor she wanted to work on every day and left a message for 3 weeks straight until that manager brought her info an interview and hired her!). We are well aware of how the system works, you need experience, but how can you get experience if no one will hire you?! Insert, NAPS.
We have worked with many colleges and universities in the area, from teaching the maternity clinical for undergrad programs, to guest lecturing, to guest speaking for student nurses associations. WE.LOVE.STUDENTS. And understand your unique value and expertise, which is why we aren’t afraid to hire and train you right out of school.
What exactly does this new grad program entail?
Our goal with the new grad program is to hire and train you to work as an overnight nurse caring for our women post delivery, newborn babies, and the family as a whole.
The program will guarantee you a set number of night shifts a week. Night shifts are in-home with a newborn (usually 8 or 10 hour shifts).
We will include an allotted amount of time to learn and train in other specialty areas related to maternal child health under the supervision of our seasoned nurses.
These additional opportunities include learning about lactation and becoming a lactation consultant
Becoming more well versed in prenatal education and learning more about becoming a childbirth educator
Exploring postpartum care and complications that can arise for birthing mothers with our women’s health NP
Learning more about newborn sleep, development, and complications that can arise during the newborn period from our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
After gaining experience through working on our team, we would then welcome you to stay on with us or would be happy to help you network and/or provide a referral and references for you should you want to continue or education, or seek a job in labor and delivery, postpartum, the NICU, or at a children’s hospital (or elsewhere).
This sounds too good to be true, what’s the catch?
There’s truly no catch! And just so we are all clear, here is exactly what the program entails:
The length of the program is 6 months. Upon acceptance of a job, you will be required to sign a 6 month contract
That contract will guarantee you a set number of hours each week (24-40), that you will work daytime and overnight nursing care shifts. You are required to work overnight for this job.
You will be provided with an extensive onboarding, including training in caring for newborns and postpartum women, as well as lactation and bottle feeding, newborn sleep, and more.
You will be paired with a preceptor, who will shadow prior to your first solo shift and who will be your “buddy” throughout the program.
You will be provided at least one day of shadowing per month for lactation, at least one day of shadowing per month for prenatal education, and at least one day of shadowing per month for parental education (including but not limited to sleep consulting, webinars, support groups, lunch and learn etc.)
You will have one nursing care team group meet-up per month facilitated by our pediatric nurse practitioner.
At the end of the 6 month contract, you will have the opportunity to continue to work with us at NAPS (our hope, but not a requirement!) or will be given the opportunity to try something new, and we will happily provide you with a reference.
Well I’m still reading, so I must be interested. What else do I need to know?
Honestly, not too much more!
We ask that you are a bachelors prepared nurse, who is a soon to be or recent (with the past 6 months) graduate of an undergraduate nursing care program.
Experience in maternal/child health is not required, but if you have done any work personally (like babysitting or nannying) or professionally (like as a nurses aid or a co-op) please share that information with us!
You are required to be BLS certified
Able to provide proof of up to date flu, COVID, and TDap Vaccines and Boosters.
You are also required to have a car.
Great, I’m in, now what?
All you need to do is fill out the application below, attach your resume, and we will be in touch to set up a time for an interview!
